3 Mistakes Many Aspiring Self – Publishing Authors Make

Becoming an author is a ‘dream come true’ for many of us. Thank God for the rise in self-publishing options, this dream is more possible because we don’t need to be knocking on literary agents’ doors to become an author.

With the help of websites like Createspace.com, Ingramspark.com and other self-publishing sites, we can easily upload our manuscripts and with great enthusiasm expecting thousands of books to be sold. This expectation is often met with disappointment when your book is published and only a few family members or friends seem to be supporting.

Let’s be honest, when you believe the message you have to share is God-inspiring or you have the best advice to share with the world, you question why people aren’t interested.

So I want to share 3 mistakes many self-publishing authors make:

1) They write a book without having a proper marketing plan: Let me tell you, no matter how well-written your manuscript is, unless you have a strategy to get this book to the ideal readers, then don’t expect you will become a New York Times Best Seller overnight. You have to know how you will make people aware of your book. Think about a movie, we don’t see movies just popping up at theaters; sometimes even years before we start hearing about a movie to be released and this boost our anticipation. As an aspiring author, you need to start building the anticipation of your ideal reader and strategize how you will get your amazing message to the persons who need it.

2) They don’t want to invest in proper services: I know you want to publish a book and you believe you want the cheapest way to get it done; but going cheap often result in a poor representation of your book. Listen; invest in this dream to ensure you are putting out the best material. In the writing world, people do judge a book by its cover, so get a quality book cover design, hire a book coach and pay for proper editing and formatting services.

3) They don’t know who they are writing the book for:  This might sound weird but most times aspiring authors believe they are writing for everyone or they are simply writing and hoping to just get anyone’s support. I know you are convinced that the message God gave you will save the world, but it won’t. What God gave you is for specific persons and it’s important to know who you are writing this book to help.

I hope if you’re aspiring to become an author this will challenge you in your preparation to release your project.
