“Who am I that you are mindful of me
That you hear me, when I call
Is it true that you are thinking of me?
How you love me
It’s amazing
I am a friend of God”
Above are some lyrics from the song titled ‘Friend of God’ song by Israel Houghton.
To be called a friend of God is such a privilege. The Self-Sufficient, Self existent, Eternal, Sovereign, Immutable, Infinite, Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Wise, Holy, and Just, yet so humble, God who sits high chooses to look below and call me FRIEND.
I don’t know about you, but I DO NOT walk around calling everyone my friend. The definition of friend for me is someone who believes in you, looks out for you, supports you, corrects you and sees you at your worst but still chooses to love you. They see you at your best and cheer you on- it is someone you share a mutual bond with. The truth of the matter is being a friend is not easy, you can’t be everyone’s friend and, quite frankly, not everyone is understands what true friendship is. We as human beings are unique individuals. We have different perspectives, personalities, different ways of handling situations, different ways of showing our emotions and this often times causes conflicts.
The Word says in John 15:15 that, “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” Some of us are still only servants to God because we have not yet come to the realization that we too have a part to play in the friendship. God is a faithful God and he will always carry out his end of the bargain, it is us who need to do our part, by communicating with him, reading his word and trusting in it no matter what we are seeing in the physical and by living a righteous life before Him.
“James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend.”
Often times we hear pastors preach about God calling us His friend and everybody gets excited and happy, not that we shouldn’t, but you need to recognize that a friendship must be nurtured and you have a responsibility and a role to play in the development of that friendship. If you haven’t contributed to, invested in, sacrificed for this friendship then sweetheart you have nothing to be happy and excited about. God Loves us all with an everlasting love, He wants the absolute best for all of us but it will require some effort on your par. He won’t force anyone to do something they don’t want to, if that were so and God were a dictator, heaven would’ve been a guarantee, but that’s not the case.
So I challenge you today to do your part, nurture your friendship with God and watch it grow.
God Bless you.
