Proverbs 31 is as an inspiring example of God showing us how He wants us to be good stewards of our money.  Let’s explore the different ways we can apply her characteristics to our life today.

1.     Be trustworthy.

The heart of her husband trusts in her [with secure confidence],

And he will have no lack of gain. (Proverbs 31:11)

Avoid financial infidelity which refers to secrecy or dishonesty about money with a partner. This could involve secret shopping and hiding bags in the car or closet from a spouse, an unknown separate bank account, or a hidden gambling addiction. Being open and honest about money is key and foundational to a successful relationship.

2.     Be diligent.

She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. (Prov. 31:18)

She finds delight in her work, makes a profit, and embodies incredible work ethic. God has given us talents and abilities to further His Kingdom. Are you using your gifts? When you align with your God given gifts and purpose, He blesses us with abundance.

3.     Make smart decisions.

She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. (Proverbs 31:16)

This woman was wise when it came to purchases and investments. When we manage our own money, we should think about what and why we’re buying something. Do I need it? CanI afford it? When we have major financial decisions to make, always pray about it for God to guide you to make the right decision.

4.     Be generous.

She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. (Proverbs 31:20)

We are taught to be cheerful givers and to be generous. When we are going through tough times, one question I always ask myself is, “How is my giving?” She found ways to bless those in need. Being generous isn’t just about the money – it’s about our heart. It’s having the mindset and attitude that we are blessed to be a blessing to others.

5.      Plan ahead.

She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. (Proverbs 31:21-22)

It’s critical to be prepared. I always say, “Be proactive versus reactive.” Think about how many people scramble during a financial disaster because they weren’t prepared? You can’t create a solid financial future if you don’t plan. Make going over your finances and setting goals a priority that you practice weekly.

Let the Proverbs 31 woman be an example of what we can strive for and let her be an inspiration to you. When we can grow and move towards being good stewards of our money, God will continue to bless us abundantly and in the other areas of our life. He will bless us for being diligent and obedient.
