As seasoned users of social media, we are sure to come across videos of persons using words of affirmation. Especially now during this quarantine period where we are using the technology more, these flood our timelines and feeds. We smile when we see them, they provide feel good moments and we think about how we may use these in the future with our own children. Videos of parents with their children, teachers with their students and motivational speakers encouraging persons to see the best in themselves.
Some of the most popular “I am” affirmations you will hear include but are not limited to:
- I am beautiful
- I am smart
- I am loved
- I am enough
- I am strong
Why would we need to be reminded of these statements? Shouldn’t these be the core of who we are? Why is this becoming such an increasing trend you may ask?
This is because many of us have broken thoughts and perceptions about ourselves. Many of these negative perceptions were formed from our childhood experiences and we carried them into adulthood. We never dealt with them in a fulsome way that allowed us to walk in the freedom of who were called to be.
As I even think of my own experience and allow my thoughts to wander into that place that can sometimes be uncomfortable, I bring all the negative voices to the forefront of mind. I think of the many wonderful opportunities I cheated myself out of because I did not think I was good enough. I allowed myself to believe that I was not ready for the opportunities presented and that somehow, I had to attain perfection before I could do so. Perfection is not realistic and so in the imperfectness of this flesh I did not feel worthy of God’s promises for me. Nothing that is hidden can be dealt with, and at the core of many of our behaviors are these thoughts that are not grounded in who God is or His Word. If we are His children, then we should not accept certain thoughts about ourselves.
I believe that the Lord is providing an opportunity for us to reboot and recharge because the next season, renewed minds will be critical to our success. This renewal, however, can only take place in the confines of a relationship with God and through His Word. It is through His Word that we will discover who we are and what we have access to as children of God. We can say all the right things but it is not until we have an encounter through the Word of God that we will see true change.
In Hebrews 4:12 it says that the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. If you want to shift your negative thoughts, only the Word can pierce and destroy to allow the light of God to illuminate and consume your mind. When we create the time to be still, meditate and really allow the Word to shift our negative thoughts to something positive then we will see lasting change. We will say these words of affirmation not just because they sound good but because we have a biblical grounding on which foster the environment for transformation to occur.
- I am beautiful – Song of Solomon 4:7 – You are altogether beautiful my love, there is no flaw in you
Psalm 139:14 – I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made
- I am smart – Daniel 5:14 – I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.
- I am loved – Romans 8:39 – nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- I am enough – 2 Corinthians 12:9 – My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness
- I am strong – Isaiah 40:29 – He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength
Anything we struggle within our minds can be impacted by the Word of God. It does not matter how long those negative seeds have been planted. If we take the time to read its pages, we will find that we are more powerful, equipped and impactful than we believe that we are.
