In my blog “Building A Speaking Platform”, I mentioned that not every speaker is called to be a teacher or preacher. In this blog, I try to share some distinction between speaking, teaching and preaching.
There is also a difference between motivational speaking and being a Christian speaker.
As a teacher, you are trying to give your audience a deep insight of the Word. It’s more about sharing knowledge, whether on a specific topic, bible chapter or subject.
As a preacher, it can involve a bit of teaching but it could also include rebuke, reprove and exhorting.
Based on the research I’ve done, scriptures such as Luke 20:1, Acts 5:42 and 1 Tim. 5:17 shows there is a distinction between both. So I encourage you to do your own research.
I can tell you that preaching and teaching is not to be taken lightly, especially in these last days where false doctrines are prevalent and persons are trying to use God’s Word to push their personal agenda (whether for money, power or prestige). Being able to discern, grow in intimacy with God and spend time to truly study God’s Word is compulsory.

What is speaking?
As a Christian speaker, I don’t necessarily believe you are called to teach or preach. A great explanation I found from Sheila Wray Gregoire states that speaking is an inspirational message that you deliver for the purpose of helping people to transform their lives. This type of talk requires that you connect with people emotionally. We believe only the power of Jesus Christ can transform lives, so in this type of speaking, the purpose is to point people to Christ as the change agent.
While a motivational speaker is someone who delivers speeches with the intention of motivating or inspiring the audience, they tend to encourage them to look at things from a different perspective and to make changes by looking at themselves and their own abilities.
There have been many debates if a Christian should be a motivational speaker, especially since most stages they are invited to, you may not be able to refer to God. But next week, I will do a blog about that.
Sometimes persons will find themselves doing a little teaching, preaching, speaking or motivational speaking. Honestly, in order for you to truly become a better and sought after speaker, knowing where you are called and where God is leading you to serve is vital.
Understand that you are not called for everyone. This means that in whatever area you will be focused on especially in the beginning of your ministry or business, you will need to learn to develop your skills, knowledge and experience.
I can say speaking is a powerful tool… whether to share the Gospel, build a business, encourage others or building a platform. We all have a personal message (a story that of overcoming a struggle we can share to inspire others) and I believe that in this world where we are constantly bombarded with negativity, being inspired or motivated is beneficial to help others to believe in the power of God and also tap into our potential.
With this I’ve designed a 4-Week Coaching Program called Empowered2Speak. After speaking for over 3 years, with over 50 public engagements, there is so much I wished I knew when I started. I know I have a very long way to go but I believe I’m called to equip believers with the tools to package their message so they can increase their income while impacting the Kingdom for the glory of God.
