Last weekend I had the opportunity to watch the 3 part Netflix series called “Self-Made based on the life of Madame CJ Walker”.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie! The story was very inspiring and I found myself feeling motivated and determined to work harder in my business. There were however, some parts of the movie that had me really thinking and I wanted to share my personal takeaways.

LESSON 1.“Whatever you truly put your mind to, you can achieve”. —— I’m sure many of us have said this and even know this. Do we also believe it enough to act on it?

Personally, I’ve seen times in my life when I became resolute to accomplish a goal and you best believe I outshine myself and achieved it. We could see Madam CJ Walker being determined to build a successful business and she accomplished it. With a true made-up mind (determination), your dreams really can become a reality.

Coaching Moment: What dream do you really desire to achieve and are you willing to do the work to accomplish it?

Lesson 2: “The Power of Focus accomplish our goals faster”. —- In my entrepreneurial journey, I’ve heard and seen how FOCUS will accelerate our success, the movie really brought this to life. I’ve struggled with focusing on one thing and being known for one thing. Sigh…. I feel like I strive as a multi-tasker plus I’m so passionate about so many things. Yet Madame CJ Walker wanted to revolutionize the beauty industry and so to do this she focused on that goal and that goal only and she accomplished.  I’m convicted and challenged to say to myself “Crystal what’s your focus?”

Coaching Moment: What is your focus? How can you ensure you stick to your main goal and not be distracted by all the things you could be doing?

LESSON 3: “What you feed grows and what you starve dies” In the movie, her marriage suffered and as result of this her husband cheated (not blaming her totally for this, because he had a choice). He complained that she never had time for him and her business was her “main focus”. As a woman of faith, I was a bit sadden by this; I know how important marriage is to God. While, I’ve seen many people bash her even myself was tempted to also, I was reminded of what you feed grows and what you starve dies. Watching the movie, a few times I found myself thinking will I be willing to sacrifice my marriage for wealth and my answer is NO. I also found myself asking, is it that as ambitious women who desire to build generational wealth, we have to sacrifice something for another? Example, my faith for fame or marriage for money. I hope not. This is where you as an individual have to know your “why” and be guided by our personal values and morals. Ensure we feed what matters most.

Coaching Moment: What are your top 3 core values and how can you ensure you’re feeding what’s most important to you as you go after your goals?

As I watched the movie, I was reminded that none of us are perfect and this is why we need God’s guidance more than ever. In life we will make mistakes and have regrets; but I’m personally comforted by Romans 8:28 that says “God will work all things out for my good “and Jeremiah 29:11 that says “God’s plans for my life is good”. So, life will never be perfect but as long as we desire and seek to please God and fulfill His will then we can achieve the success we desire and work for.

There were other lessons I saw but these are the top 3 I wanted to share with you to really challenge myself and my readers to think about.

If you watched the movie, I would love for you to share your top lesson with us.
