Today I want to share some steps on building your speaking ministry or business.
This blog is simply an introduction to encourage speakers (and aspiring speakers). Many of us don’t ever feel qualified to speak as a Christian. Based on my experience, the level of inadequacy we feel when God laid the desire to speak on our hearts is so crippling because we immediately feel so much fear that we are not good enough.
Even from biblical days, we can see various examples of men who struggled to answer the call of God; including Moses, Joshua and Gideon. As Solomon says there is nothing new under the sun (Ecc, 1:9). So, this fear to step out in obedience and faith to speak as a vessel of God is not unique to you.
Let’s get into three tips:
1) You don’t need a special “calling” to speak
Despite the opinions of many that tries to sow seeds of doubt and fear into your mind about speaking – you don’t need a special “anointing, qualification or permission to speak”.
Know there is a difference between a teacher, preacher and speaker. A teacher and preacher do need to have knowledge of scriptures and many do have the spiritual gifts and anointing to do so. But I’m not referring to these persons.
Matthew 28:19 – 20 – Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This verse instructs every believer to go share the Gospel and it’s not always about going on a stage but whatever platform you’re given to share on, whether PTA, school, work, women’s or youth meetings etc
Many times though I believe we will feel an uction from the Holy Spirit that He is leading us to speak on a stage and don’t be intimated by anyone’s opinion. Trust the Holy Spirit that lives in you to guide you along the journey.
2) Start with your story
Many times persons ask what should I speak on, but it’s always advisable to share how you answered the call to become a believer. People can argue with biblical facts but they cannot deny a changed life. Each of us has experienced a unique encounter with Christ and that will be an encouragement to others that Jesus truly saves.
3) Hone your skills
As a Christian speaker, know that a big stage won’t come overnight. Know that nothing is wrong with starting with small beginnings but invest in honing your speaking and presentation skills. But it’s even more important you spend time growing in your faith through prayer and reading the Word. You can also listen to other speakers on YouTube, join Toastmasters, do courses or go to Conferences and retreats and even if you can get a mentor or coach to help you sharpen your skills to build your speaking ministry or business.
There is so much more I could share but I’ll stop here. We cannot deny there is a rise of speakers in the marketplace and probably even preachers. But I believe that more Christians need to arise in the speaking arena.
With this I’ve designed a 4-Week Coaching Program called Empowered2Speak. After speaking for over 3 years, with over 50 public engagements, there is so much I wished I knew when I started. I know I have a very long way to go but I believe I’m called to equip believers with the tools to package their message so they can increase their income while impacting the Kingdom for the glory of God.
