3 Ways You Know You’re Called to Work With Young People

Many times, I meet people who share that they want to work with young people, but they feel insecure and wonder if they are really called to do it. Today, I want to share 3 ways you can know if you’re purposed to mentor or coach teens or young adults. If you can say yes, to any of these, I believe you are called to impact the next generation.

  1. You find that a lot of young people feel comfortable sharing with you.

Often there is a divide between young people and those much older. This is so due to young people feeling as if those older them are untrustworthy with what they may have to share. Be honest, you would feel uncomfortable with being vulnerable to someone if you deemed them as untrustworthy. Therefore, if not just one young person, but several young people find it comfortable to speak to you about their issues and altogether their life, do take note and realize what a privilege that is. With this not being a reality for many, if it is for you, it is highly likely that you are called to serve young people.

  1. You wish that you had a mentor when you were growing up so you want to be that for someone.

A mentor is one who is able to guide another person in one or several areas of their life, due to the knowledge and wisdom he or she has. Though today’s young people are different from other generations of young people in more ways than one, there is one thing that is similar and will never change with generations of young people to come – they are struggling. Do you remember the things you cried over and struggled with and you felt like no one understood or was willing to hear you out? Do you remember the pain that came with you feeling unloved or undervalued? Do you remember the bad habits that took you a long time to get over? It is the same today for many young people. The wisdom and knowledge you have garnered from your experiences are not your own, it is to share with those who need a helping hand. No one is an island and no one deserves to stand alone, that includes our young people. You will be surprised at what young people will overcome and the experiences they may avoid getting themselves into with your help.

  1. You have a sincere desire to positively impact the next generation.

A desire denotes an undeniable and strong feeling for a thought to become a reality. It often speaks to something you want to achieve. If you are pregnant with a desire to impact the next generation, let that desire be birthed. Your life gives off a domino effect, it impacts both directly and indirectly the lives of others. The next generation is waiting for what you have to offer to propel them to reach heights they will never reach unless you act on your desire. To not act on your desire would be selfish, no one benefits, no one wins. This generation is waiting on you.

Can you say, yes, to anyone of these statements? 1. Awesome tips. I can recall when I needed someone for support but was met with a judgemental attitude. Mentors are definitely needed. Thank you Crystal.
