You are there! Psalm 139 Expanded by paul A. blake

Psalm 139 falls in the theological category of Psalms, called Psalms of reorientation. Simply put, it is a psalm which expresses the feelings of an individual who once faced hopelessness, but rediscovers faith. David comes to the place where he has no other choice but to acknowledge the awesomeness of a God who is in control of all things. He now understands he serves a God who knows him far better than he knows himself, and the only choice he has is to sink to his knees in praise and prayer. Even when his circumstances threaten to cause him to reject God, there is a constant reminder God will not leave him alone in his despair. He asks where can I go from your presence, and the only suitable answer is he can never escape the presence of God.

How often do we walk in the footsteps of David? How many times, because of circumstances beyond our control we are left with feelings of hopelessness? When we come face to face with our mortality and despair, it convinces us that God has left us on our own? These are the times we need to tap into our reserve and pull out a reminder that we are never removed from the presence of our loving God. David is not trying to escape God. What he does is acknowledge the omnipresence of God and remind us that He is aware of all we go through.

The next time we feel abandoned because our circumstances seem greater than our faith, remember David’s words of inspiration: YOU ARE THERE! From verse 7-12 he asks a series of questions and provides the obvious answers. God’s presence in our lives is His grace overflowing. Nothing about us or what we go through escapes the attention of God. There is no situation so dire that our God cannot reach down and disrupt the flow of things. Even when the enemy has a hand in our lives, we are assured the battle already belongs to Him. God watches over us day and night. Learning to trust the God of complete knowledge and constant presence is good for us. We may never be able to flee from the burden of our circumstances, but we can rest in the assurance of a God who delivers. He doesn’t deliver us because it is convenient for Him; He does so because it is what He has promised. Sometimes we may lose our minds for a moment like Asaph in Psalm 73, but God has a way of bringing us back to our senses. Wherever we go in trouble, we can rest assured that God will be there to take us through the darkness and bring us into the light of His love. YOU ARE THERE!
